Culture in Transfer: Translation and Transcultural Communication (Call for papers)

Zuletzt aktualisiert: 21 Feb 2016

The deadline for abstracts is March 20th, 2016

The conference will be organized and hosted by the

 Institute of English Studies at the University of Wroclaw, Poland

on 10-11 June 2016

We invite papers related to the broadly conceived thematic field of Culture in Transfer. The Conference will address issues of translation as an information conduit connecting different cultures. Although we may not be fully aware of it, translation permeates almost every aspect of our lives, serving as the cornerstone for the global village that the world has now become. Whether at work, when trying to hammer out a deal with a foreign investor, or at home, when enjoying a good criminal novel by a foreign author, translation proves to be indispensable. In our discussions, we will aim to explore how translation influences (and is influenced by) sociological and culture-shaping processes. The conference panels will focus on research areas including:

  • Cultural and social aspects of translation (literary translation, legal translation, technical translation, etc.);
  • Translation and creativity (adaptation, transcreation, translation of humor, dialects or slang, etc.);
  • Localization (software localization, video game translation);
  • Translation in the age of New Media;
  • The translation process as an intercultural dialogue;
  • Interpreter/translator as a cultural mediator;
  • The role of an interpreter/ a translator in society;
  • Contextual aspects of translation;
  • Translation as/at the crossroads of culture;
  • Translation and globalization processes;
  • The limits of translation and (un)translatability;
  • Translation quality assessment;
  • Translation ethics;
  • Translation universals;
  • Other issues on the borders of translation and culture.

We especially welcome comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives connected with translation and culture/society in the fields of:

  • Literary Studies
  • Translation Studies
  • General linguistics
  • Functional translatology
  • Media Studies

Contributed talks will be limited to 20 minutes with additional 10 minutes for discussion. Abstracts of proposed papers should not exceed 250 words (references excluded). In addition, please include a short biographical note (approximately 100 words). Selected papers will have an opportunity to be published in the first issue of a new peer-reviewed academic journal TranslatoLogica.
