The 2nd International Conference on Multilingualism: Challenges, Theoretical Perspectives and Practical Implications.
20-21 November, 2019
Faculty of Languages, Arts and Human Sciences
Ait Melloul Campus
Ibn Zohr University, Morocco

Multilingualism has attracted growing attention and interest from researchers all over the world. This growing interest in both individual and societal multilingualism could be explained by the fact that this phenomenon is regarded as both an added value and a source of challenges for individuals as well as societies. Individuals who speak more than one language find themselves, on a daily basis, in situations where they have to choose which language to use. This choice could be conscious or unconscious depending on many factors. A decrease in using a language can lead to a decrease in competence and eventually to language loss which can lead to a complex relationship between language use and identity. This situation of multilinguals becomes more complicated when it is analyzed from a societal perspective. The languages used in one society differ in statuses as minority/majority languages and this is often related to whether the language is used in private or public domains. Another challenge for multilingual societies is the relationship between multilingualism and nationalism since language is a strong symbol of the unity of a nation. Hence, decisions about official language or languages, foreign languages at school and languages of instruction are not obvious choices. The aforementioned variables make language policy and language planning in multilingual communities a complicated process.

We welcome papers on a wide range of topics including but not limited to:
